First Team Season: 1993 - 1994

In 1993 - 1994 following their County Senior League Division Two title triumph the Staveley Miners Welfare first team courtesy of Inkersall Roads excellent facilities, not least the brand new floodlights that had recently been installed, were promoted two divisions and took their place in the Central Midlands League Supreme Division for what was regarded by the people at the club at the time the first in the English league Pyramid system.

August

21st v Harworth Colliery Institute (H) - The programme for the first game of the season featured a message from first team manager Dave Tromans thanking everyone for their hard work in getting the club and its facilities up to scratch to allow entry to the Central Midlands League and a bit of reminiscing from club Chairman Henry Ireson about the days when "we used to get changed in the Miners Welfare" (for those of you not familiar the "welfare" is about half a mile down the road from the pitch)

For the first twenty minutes of the game itself neither side were in control until after creating two good chances down the left, Mick Hoskins and Lee Vernon exchanged passes before crossing for Steve Botchett to convert. That lead was extended just before halftime when Mick Holden latched onto a Carl Fuller through ball to lash home.

Two became three in the seventieth minute when Mick Holden again collected another long through ball to fire home, ensuring Staveley got off to a good start in a comfortable 3-0 win.

28th v Kiveton Park (H) - Last seasons joint top scorer Darren Vernon got off the mark in this 2-0 victory, with Steve Botchett getting the other one.

September

11th v Rossington Main B (H) - (Sheffield Senior Cup qr1) - The away side were put to the Staveley sword in the first of THREE!!! cup competitions to be played this season Ady Wells, Steve Botchett and Lee Vernon grabbed two each with Mick Holden, Darren Vernon and Steve Botchett getting one, to leave the final score at 9-3.

18th v Sheffield Aurora (H) - Funny old games isn't it? after nearly getting double figures in the last game Staveley couldn't manage even one in this, but if you can't score don't concede and that's exactly what happened as they remained unbeaten. 0-0.

25th v Heanor Town (H) - That unbeaten run came to an end thanks to a 0-1 defeat against the men from the Town ground.

29th v Eastwood Priory (A) - Both Steve Botchett and Darren Vernon scored to secure a point. 2-2.

October

2nd v Sandiacre Town (A) - Former Matlock player Carl Fuller scored his first of the season against the leagues bottom club, it wasn't enough however as the home side recorded their first win of the season 2-1.

9th v  Harworth Colliery Institute (H) (SSC qr2) - Playing neat, attractive football Staveley completely dominated from start to finish and progressed to the third round as Kevin Wragg, first of all ensured a halftime lead when he converted a corner at the far post,

Steve Botchett doubled that lead after the interval and then Andy Wood chipped the keeper to make it three. Daz Vernon headed the fourth after a fine run from his brother Lee, and following two goals for Harworth from defensive lapses Mick Holden put the game to bed by lashing home a half chance to make the final score 5-2.

16th v Oakham United (H) - Staveley's up and down start to the season continued as they lost this one 0-1.

19th v Blidworth Welfare (H) - Rob Atkin secured the points in this 1-0 win that moved Staveley up to 7th in the league.

23rd v Sandiacre Town (H) (Central Midlands League Cup 1) - Progress in the second cup competition of the season was ensured thanks to a goal from Mick Holden. 1-0.

26th v Sheffield Aurora (H) (Wakefield Floodlight Cup Group A) - the third and final cup competition saw teams in the supreme division of the league who had floodlights. Thirteen clubs entered and Staveley were drawn in group A, along with Blidworth, Nettleham and of course Aurora, and just like the world cup the top two from each of the four groups would qualify for the knockout stages.

Perhaps it understandable with three cups and a league to play in, that Staveley rested a few of the more recognised first teamers and this undoubtedly contributed to the 1-4 defeat - Phil Greaves got the consolation goal.

in other news it was announced that such was the popularity of Staveley Miners Welfare that the club was looking to run coaches (plural!!) to ALL their away games...and twenty years or so later the same remains true.

Supporters away coach - coming to a Northern Counties Premier League ground near you soon!! - available to sponsor for the 2015 / 2016 season!

30th v Long Eaton United (A) - The supporters travelling to South Derbyshire on the first outing of the new coach (if infact it was the first trip) won't have enjoyed the game, as they saw a lacklustre Staveley side fail to create anything of real note and went into the break 1-0 down.

The second half saw slight improvement, but not enough, and a long hopeful ball which deceived the defence saw Jamie Booth in goal save the initial shot but in getting no help whatsoever from his defenders he could only watch as the  ball was thumped home to give the home side a 2-0 lead.

Carl Fuller reduced the arrears with ten minutes left which sparked a frantic end, and United's keeper 'Bidder tipped a Phil Greaves effort over the bar but it was too little too late and Long Eaton held on. 2-1.

November

2nd v Nettleham (A) (WFC A) - Once again changes had to made due to work commitments and injuries but a much improved, determined Staveley performance saw Darren Vernon race onto a Rob Atkin through ball and calmly slotting home early on. The second goal when on his debut Andy Taylor walked the ball into the net after a mix up between defence and 'keeper. Nettleham got a goal back early in the second but it proved to be just a consolation. 1-2

6th v Borrowash Victoria (H) - Victoria took an early lead after a defensive slip and Staveley had keeper Jamie Booth to thank for keeping the score at that for the majority of the half, but just before halftime and after hitting the post Steve Bothcett converted an Ady Wells pass to make it 1-1 at the break.

Just 45 seconds after the restart the game was turned on its head when Rob Atkin scored following a neat one two on the edge of the box.

It was 2-2 moments later, but it didn't stay that way for long as the frenetic start to the second half continued, this time Ady Wells beat a defender and scored to put Staveley back into a lead they would never relinquish despite constant pressure from the away side.

Carl Fuller planted a header against the run of play to make things a little more comfortable towards the end. 4-2.

10th v Sheffield Oakhouse (H) (SSC 1) - no goals were scored in 120 minutes thanks in part to the excellent contributions made by both Jamie Booth for Staveley and Russ Parsonage for Oakhouse who each produced excellent saves to earn their sides a replay.

13th v Glapwell (H) - An Adam Carline strike earned a decent point against the league leaders.1-1.

17th v Nettleham (H)(WFC A) The games were coming thick and fast at this stage of the season and once again five changes needed to be made from the previous line up and once again the result didn't go Staveleys way as they lost 0-1.

20th v Sheffield Oakhouse (A - played at H) (SSC 1r) - The game was switched back to Inkersall Road but the rather amusing and very complimentary programme was produced by Oakhouse.

They say a picture paints a thousand words so....

As it happens the game of darts wasn't required in the end as Staveley ran out  0-3 winners thanks to two goals from Ady Wells and one from Steve Botchett.

December

1st v Blidworth Welfare (A)(WFC A) - it was clear by now that Staveley we'rent all that bothered about this Floodlit Cup malarkey as they crashed to another defeat after another raft of changes to the starting line up. 2-0.

4th v Gedling Town (H) - Resting players however was seemingly bearing fruit in the league campaign and Carl Fuller, Darren Vernon and a hattrick from Ady Wells ensured a 5-2 victory.

15th v Maltby MW (H)(SSC 2)  -  A great performance against Northern Counties Premier League opposition (two divisions higher) with goals from Ady Wells and Phil Greaves ensuring a replay wasn't necessary this time round 2-1

18th v Harworth Colliery Institute (A) - In what was probably the game of the day former Buxton and Matlock defender Carl Fuller, former YTS Peterborough United midfielder Rob Atkin and former Chesterfield player Phil Greaves all scored but the three goals were only enough for a point. 3-3.

January

4th v Sheffield Aurora (A) (WFC A) - with two games left to play in Group A there was still a faint hope of getting through to the knockout stages, but no interest had been paid to the competition all season and I bet no one was surprised or bothered when the game finished 0-0.

15th v Stocksbridge Park Steels (A)(SSCqf) - For the second round in a row Staveley faced Northern Counties Premier League opposition and once again rose to the occasion with Carl Fuller scoring the goal that made sure the two sides would meet again a week later.

22nd v Stocksbridge Park Steels (H)(SSCqfr) - Similar heroics ensued in the replay however it wasn't to be as Staveley lost by the odd goal in five. Steve Botchett and Ady Wells with the goals. 2-3.

26th v Blidworth Welfare (H)(WFC A) - the last game in the "not really bothered" cup ended in a 1-1 draw Carl Fuller with the goal.

29th v Askern Welfare (A)(CMLC2) - Carl Fuller scored his eighth goal of the season (not bad for a defender?) adding to a Steve Botchett strike to send Staveley though 2-1 against the Doncaster based side from the division below.

February

1st v Kimberley Town (A) - Staveley battled the elements on a pitch made heavy due to recent persistent rain but still managed to dominate the first half, despite this the scores were level at the break. The game was wrapped up in Staveleys favour early in the second half when first a freekick from R.Lilley found its way into the top corner and Lilley again found the net after some great work by Phil Greaves to secure the first away league win of the season!! 0-2.

5th v Heanor Town (A)(CMLCqf) - "our first half display was probably the best we have played since the club the was formed" that was the assessment of manager Dave Tromans, after totally dominating, the first half.

Home 'keeper Miles was on top form producing two fine saves to thwart R.Lilley and Mick Hoskins and getting a bit of luck when his own skipper Baker headed against his own crossbar.

midway through that first half John Seels had a strong appeal for a penalty turned down and wouldn't you just know it Heanor went up the other end and took the lead. Carl Fuller though ensured the scores were level at the interval.

Miles saved again from Mick Hoskins early on in a second half which Heanor came more and more into and towards the end Staveley had Jamie Booth to thank for his brilliant save to ensure a replay.

9th v Heanor Town (H)(CMLCqfr) - Missing no less than eight players from the previous game due to one reason and another Staveley had to battle the wind in the first half but the away side didn't get to grips with it and were over hitting their passes.

Heanor took the lead midway through the second half however when Baker scored with his head, and in pushing forward to equalise Jamie Booth was left exposed in Staveleys goal but as usual he was up to the task and his saves gave Staveley a platform to build on which they did with David Hoole equalising with the last kick of the game.

That meant extra time and just as penalties seemed the more likely outcome, Preston headed home the winner for Heanor after a long range shot had thundered off the Staveley crossbar.

Dave Tromans lamenting afterwards that just like in the Sheffield Senior Cup the best chance to go through had been in the first encounter.

12th v Shirebrook Town (A) - The exit from all of the cups now left just the cliched league to concentrate on which was a bit of a blessing in disguise as the team went on a ten match unbeaten run starting with this 2-1 win courtesy of two Phil Greaves goals.

19th v Rossington (H) - Staveley, a good footballing side who use the flanks well* piled on the pressure throughout the first half and by the break were leading 1-0 thanks to a goal poked in after a goalmouth scramble. it could have been more but for a combination of some wayward finishing and the brilliance of Lang in the net for the away side.

Rossingtons manager sited Staveley playing as a unit as opposed to his own side playing as individuals as a major reason for their lack of chances and this had an affect of sorts as Rossington in their first ever visit to Inkersall Road played much better in the second half and managed to score themselves in the last minute...

...they had however conceded another three goals by then though, a powerful header from a corner, a shot from the edge of the area after moments before clearing off the line and an own goal which made the final score 4-1.

*the above report is paraphrased from the Rossington programme from the corresponding away game and doesn't mention who scored which goal  so its over to Kevin Wragg, Kevin? Lee, R.Lilley and Shane? Turner to fight over the pick of them.  nb: Staveley team stats do not mention an own goal, but reading the report about the goal my money would be on substitute Shane? Turner as the "scorer".

Also from that programme.."Staveley impressed me as a side who played well as a unit to a pattern similar to our own. They did not give us much time or space on the ball and the quality of their ball forward was good. I believe they were several players short on the day, and so with  full compliment they must be surely a force in the league. They were solid at the back and well organised throughout by 47 year old David Pugh. His experience and the experience of those around him were an important factor in the game and he gave me the incentive to get back into training myself!!!

March

1st v Eastwood Priory (H) - the only draw in the unbeaten run was secured by a Carl Fuller goal.

5th v Shirebrook Town (H) - Staveley beat the men form Langwith Road for the second time in as many weeks..an eight goal thriller saw two goals from Rob Atkin and one each from Ady Wells, Andy Knowles and Mick Hoskins cancel out the three Shirebrook efforts.

12th v Rossington (A) - More goals flew in and this time without reply Seven of them to be exact..Ady Wells with a hattrick Kevin Wragg, Carl Fuller, Viv Rayson and Mick Hoskins with the others

15th v Nettleham (H) - Only the five without reply  this time Carl Fuller and two each for Viv Rayson and Ady Wells.

18th v Sheffield Aurora (A) - Team "spirit" was at an all time high and recorded yet another victory. After surviving an early burst of pressure three good chances were created and...missed. Rob Atkin however made no mistake after thirty minutes firing in a right foot shot after good work by Carl Fuller.

it should have been level just before halftime but Aurora missed from close range. The second half was put beyond them when Rob Atkin scored again with a penalty won following a foul on Carl Fuller. Mick Hoskins crashed in the third and final goal and Jamie Booth kept yet another clean sheet. 0-3.

26th v Heanor Town (A) - The first half was "best forgotten" as neither side put anything of any note together. The second half however was all Staveley and any fans still in the tea bar as it began will have missed Phil Greaves lobbing a stranded keeper to make it 0-1 and Carl Fuller extending that lead from close range just moments later

Midway through the half Ady Wells made it three by bravely heading home at the far post, a move which required him to receive help from the physios magic sponge, and after Bicknell had been sent off for the home side Andy Knowles netted the fourth and final goal with another 'keeper lobbing effort. 0-4.

APRIL

4th v Nettleham (A) - Phil Greaves with two and Ady Wells were once again on the scoresheet as yet another win was recorded.

That win left Staveley in third place and with nine games to go was a title challenge on the cards...?

9th v Kimberley Town (H) - Where better than to start that title challenge than at home to the bottom club? who last season had finished 12th with a certain Brett Marshall (Staveleys first team manager  at the start of 2015/2016) finishing as top scorer with 15 goals.

There is no evidence to suggest that Marshall was still at the club for this fixture which Staveley won 5-2 with two each from Ady Wells and Phil Greaves, Andy Knowles bagging the other one.

16th v Oakham United (A) - A 3-0 defeat signalled the end of the ten match unbeaten run, which if you only count league games was fifteen games came to an end against "The Acorns" from Sutton in Ashfield.

20th v Sandiacre Town (H) - An Ady Wells hattrick and one from Phil Greaves however got things back on track with a 4-1 home victory.
23rd v Kiveton Park (A) - The home side piled on the pressure early doors but were hit by an Ady Wells opener in the 31st minute and fell two behind when Ady Wells again rode one challenge, cut inside leaving another defender in his wake before rifling a shot into the bottom corner.

Slack defending early in the second half gave Kiveton a lifeline and just as it seemed that the three points were going back to Inkersall Road Mick Godber broke Staveley hearts in the second minute of injury time to ensure a 2-2 draw.

26th v Glapwell (A) - following a run of average results the title dream was now only a remote possibility and even if not mathematically their hope were all but ended by the side they were trying to catch. Rob Atkin and Ady Wells made a game of it but it wasn't enough to prevent a 3-2 defeat.

30th v Gedling (A) -  A definite "end of season affair" which ended 0-0.

May

Unfortunately folks that's where this review of the 1993 / 1994 season comes to an end as as of yet there isn't that much information about the final few games of the season apart from the fixtures.

2nd v Borrowash Victoria (A)

4th v Long Eaton United (H) - game finished 2-2.

7th v Blidworth Welfare (A)
