The winning run came to an end early this month but Staveley still remained unbeaten

3rd v Sheffield Centralians (A)  - Two sides with 100% records went head to head in the "Match of the Day" where honours ended even as Staveley took a point to go top of the table, goals from Steve's Shipp(penalty) and Botchett were cancelled out by Will Whitehouse and the equaliser coming via an own goal (scorer unknown)

November

The league took a back seat this month, (and for the rest of the year) that didn't stop the goals and the wins flying in though

7th v Kiveton Park (H) (WT2)- Ant Burton opened the scoring on 20 minutes firing in from 20 yards, Paul Nicholls latched onto a loose ball adding the second (62 mins) Darren Slinn (64) saw his header deflect in off a kiveton defender, Phil Greaves crossed in for Andy Knowles to score the fourth (80) and Nicholls completed the rout with his second and Staveleys 5th to minutes from time after a neat one-two with Daz Vernon.

14th v Yorkshire Main (H) (SC2) - The team from the Division above came to Inkersall road and left with nothing, beaten 5-1 by a rampant Staveley side. Daz Vernon (2) Ant Burton Paul Nicholls and Darren Evans, with the goals.

28th v Stocksbridge Park Steels (H) - Adam Carline and Andy Knowles put Staveley two up in another "Match of the Day" contest between the divisions top two. The visitors, however levelled the match at half time through Flaherty an Jones.

Manager Dave Tromans inspirational words during the halftime break soon put the game beyond the visitors as by the 60th minute Staveley were 6-2 up Phil Greaves,Paul Nicholls,Daz Vernon and Carl Slinn with the goals...the game eventually finished 7-3 to Staveley  -Simon Clarke adding the final Staveley goal.

December

Only 3 games played this month all of them cup ones as the weather took its toll on fixtures, the goals and wins dried up too

12th v Rossington Main (H) (SC3)- Staveley earned a replay thanks to a creditable 0-0 draw against their much more illustrious opponents from the Northern Counties East Side, they'll be disappointed however as they had the better chances, including a fierce freekick from Andy Knowles which was well saved...

16th v Rossington Main (A) (SC3r) - Adam Carline powered in a 61st minute header from a Daz Vernon cross which looked to have sealed the win for Staveley, unfortunately they eventually bowed to incessant pressure when just two minutes from time Paul Bilous equalised...the two teams couldn't be separated in extra time and the game went to penalties where Rossington won 5-3 Andy Knowles, Daz Vernon and John Seels scoring for the Welfare.

legendary striker Paul Nicholls (left) and defender Andy Knowles

19th v Mexborough Main Street (WT3) - Another energy sapping encounter which went the distance Phil Greaves' cross shot gave Staveley the lead which was cancelled out by Shawn Hewitt earning a replay after extra time.

January

The December blip, (if only losing on penalties can be called that) was soon rectified....

3rd v Mexborough Main Street (A) (WT3r)-Staveley Miners Welfare turned on the style to rout their Premier Division opponents and clinch a Whitbread trophy quarter final place. they were soon into their stride and went close to opening the scoring through Daz Vernon, Andy Knowles and Steve Shipp, but it was not until the 65th minute that Phil Greaves broke the deadlock volleying home an unstoppable shot from 12 yards after the home keeper could only palm out a Paul Nicholls cross.

Ten minutes later Nicholls increased the lead racing onto a through ball and rounding the keeper before slotting home. Mexborough sprang into life and mounted a series of attacks but couldn't break through, Carl Slinn outstanding in defence.  Daz Vernon  and Paul Nicholls (again) put the game to bed late on.

9th v Brunsmeer Athletic (A)(WTqf) - that quarter final was played a week later where  supersub Simon Clarke clinched a 0-1 victory, cleverly lifting the ball over Athletics keeper. Both sides struggled to cope with high winds and a boggy pitch.

Simon Clarke
16th v Sheffield Post Office (H) - Man of the moment Simon Clarke did the business again with a hattrick, Paul Nicholls and Lee Vernon added the others in a 5-0 win.

30th v Sheffield Bankers (H) - "Vernon keeps Miners top" The home team's match winner was Lee Vernon who scored a gaol in each half his first came on 20 minutes when he lobbed the keeper with "a fine solo" second coming two minutes from time.

the 2-0 win puts Staveley 4 point clear of Stocksbridge at the top with two games in hand and a vastly superior goal difference.

February

6th v Kiveton Park (H) - Theres no stopping the Vernon brothers, Daz opened the scoring after 20 minutes, converting a cross from Phil Greaves whilst Lee made it two following a shot from Daz. Lee returned the favour late on as Daz made it 3.

Lee Vernon
13th v Old Edwardians (H) - with only 18 minutes to go Staveley led 2-1 thanks to Paul Nicholls and Steve Shipp, when a quite unbelievable "goal fest" ensued, scoring one every 3 minutes the home side ran out comfortable (eight) 8-1 winners. Daz and Lee Vernon with two each and Adam Carline and Steve Botchett chipping in with the others.

20th v British Steel Stainless (A) - A spirited performance by the TInsley based club wasn't enough to stop the Staveley steam roller, as the 13th win out of 14 was secured by just the one goal from Ant Burton.

27th v Abbeydale (H) - Abbeydale took their goals against tally to 75 (21 of those scored by Staveley) as again they were swept aside 7-1. - Daz Vernon (3) Ant Burton (2) and Paul Nicholls (2)

March

Staveley headed into "the business end" of the season in Pole Position, they also had the small matter of a cup Semi Final....

3rd - v Goldthorpe Colliery (N - Oxford Street Rossington Main)(WTsf) -  Staveley once again came within two minutes of causing a major upset...

Daz Vernon gave Staveley the lead against the side second in the Premier League table, in the 67th minute nodding in a Phil Greaves freekick after a fumble by Goldthorpe's Keeper.

A lead they would hold until the 88th minute when agonisingly a penalty was given for handball converted by Gary Hough. An uninspiring game played on a bitterly cold evening went into extra time but no more goals were scored and the tie went to a replay.

Now for something that epic it really needs an orange box....

BIG SWITCH ON AT INKERSALL ROAD
Staveley MW's Inkersall Road ground was well and truly in the spotlight on Friday evening (March 5th).

For the clubs £11,000 floodlight system thought to be up to the standard of some conference clubs, was switched on. The 24 lamps - three each on eight pylons are the ones from the now defunct Staveley Works side while Mansfield company Abacus provided and put up the poles. courtesy of the lights Champions-elect of the Whitbread County Senior League's Division Two have been admitted to the Central Midland League for next season.

6th v Sheffield Gas (H) - just a day after the news, Staveley tightened their grip on the title determined to sign off from the league in style thanks to Ant Burton assisting in goals for Paul Nicholls, Daz Vernon and Simon Clarke they won 3-0...

13th v Clifton Rovers (H)...and followed that up hammering Rovers 6-1 Steve Botchett, Mick Collins, Paul Nicholls and an Adam Carline hattrick with the goals for Staveley who were 4-0 up by half time.

20th v Goldthorpe Colliery (N - Frecheville)(WTsfr) - For once it was Staveley who benefited from a last gasp equaliser, leading 1-0 thanks to a Phil Greaves strike, they were 2-1 down going into the last minute of the game, Gary Salkfield had equalised with a stunning 20 yard strike and Dave Salkfield had put the Premier Divisions 3rd place club in front with only 4 minutes left.

In the dying seconds Shane Turner pounced to set up Staveleys fifth period of extra time this season. Which, again seemed destined to go to penalties until Shaun Hartley broke Staveley hearts with 118th minute goal to send Goldthorpe through to the final 3-2.

27th v Throstles Ridgeway (H) - with just the league to concentrate on Throstles came to Inkersall road hoping to take advantage of a any cup hangover and mount a serious championship challenge. they were up to the task of sorts but only left with a point as Frazer Crapper equalised after Adam Carline had put Staveley in front.

31st - v Sheffield Centralians (H) - The first game under the new floodlights wasn't the greatest game to mark such an occasion, the game finished 0-0 and Daz Vernon missed a penalty.

April

The cup exploits meant that league fixtures were piling up with 7 of the remaining 9 games played in this month...

5th Stocksbridge PS (A) - a 0-2 victory ended the title aspirations of the one time challengers  Steve Botchett and Adam Carline with the goals on a day when closest rival Throstles Ridgway lost...

10th Penistone Church Reserves (H) - A quick fire double put this game to bed early on, so early infact some fans may not have seen the first one, Simon Clarke headed in a Paul Nicholls Cross in the first minute, Lee Vernon added the second 5 minutes later and again in the 65th minute..a comfortable 3-0 win.

12th v Sheffield Post Office (A) - Going one better the "Mailmen" were beaten 4-0 thanks to a Daz Vernon hattrick and a superb strike from the edge of the area by Paul Nicholls.

19th v Sheffield Gas (A) - Another trip into the city produced another five star performance Ady Wells and Steve Botchett (2) and a debut goal from Mick May secured a 5-0 win

21st v Rossington Main United (A) - Having scored 3,4 and 5 in the previous games, it was perhaps too much to ask to get 6 this time out...and so it proved in the 1-1 draw Paul Nicholls with the goal..
.
24th v Sheffield Oakhouse (A) - Lee Vernon and  Steve Botchett hat trick ensured the unstoppable march towards the title continued, still in contention just three points behind were Throstles Ridgeway

28th v Peinstone Church Reserves (A) - the old adage of sooner having the points rather than games in hand proved to be true. Having gone all season unbeaten the fixture pile up finally took its toll and Staveley crashed to a 2-1 defeat in this their game in hand over title rivals, this did however set up a title showdown with....

May

1st v Throstles Ridgeway (A) - A titanic winner takes all battle took place, which surprisingly doesn't seem to have been covered all that well in the local newspapers?? save for the important bit, Steve Botchett scored the only goal of the game pouncing on a poor goal kick....

5th - Clifton Rovers (A) - The final game of the season ended with goals from Steve Botchett (2) Lee Vernon and Carl Slinn contributing to another win and 3 points, which didn't matter in the end....

Staveley were already

CHAMPIONS!!!!
