First Team: 1991 - 1992

August

31st v Penistone Church Reserves (A) - Staveley Miners Welfare didn't get off to the best of starts in the Whitbread County Senior Leagues Division 3. Losing 4-3 despite going ahead three times.

Firstly on 25 minutes when John Stacey scored following a corner, forcing the home side into action. After Platts had hit the woodwork and D.Houghton had saved from Greenwood, Lee Robinson blasted home a penalty on 37 minutes.

Secondly three minutes later Neil Havenhand restored the lead with a fierce fifteen yard drive, only for Penistone to equalise again almost immediately through another Robinson penalty

Finally after 53 minutes Kevin Lee "Hit one" from 25 yards and saw it sail into the net, unfortunately for Staveley, Wetton equalised on 65  and Eyre got the winner with 9 minutes left.

September

14th v Sheffield Oakhouse (A) (Sheffield Senior Cup 1) - It didn't take long to shrug off the opening day disappointment and proggrsion in the cup against higher league opposition was assured thanks to Andy Knowles Andy Talbot, Darren Evans, Paul Brodie and an own goal. 1-5.

21st v Sheffield Gas (H) - League form picked up too. One from Paul Nicholls and a John Seels penalty secured the points in a 2-1 win.

28th v Abbeydale (A) - Trailing to to a Mark Willis strike Paul Nicholls scored the goal that secured a 1-2 victory after Neil Havenhand had equalised by nodding in a John Seels cross.

October

5th v Sheffield Gas (H) (Whitbread Trophy 1) - the outstanding Jason Leggett in goal kept the scoreline respectable but he could do nothing to keep out Paul Nicholls who scored twice in the first half to send Staveley through.

12th v East Pennine (a) (SSC2) - Pride of place goes to division three newcomers Staveley Miners Welfare, who despite fielding n understrength side, went to Premier Division East Pennine and clinched an excellent 0-2 victory.

The home side, currently riding high in the top flight are undefeated in the league and failed to score for the first time this season. Staveley got the break through with just ten minutes left when Steve Shipp headed home John Seels corner, then two minutes later makeshift striker Shane Turner secured the win.

19th v Kiveton Park (H) - The programme began by, welcoming the new players and new "photographer" Tony Barnes who was immediately given the impossible task of capturing Paul Nicholls arriving before kick off, and John Seels calling for the ball.

Sadly the game didn't live up to that excitement and ended 0-0.

November

2nd v Yorkshire Main (H) (WT2) - Another giant killing act saw Staveley through, john Stacey put them ahead converting a Paul Nicholls cross after just 13 minutes and the 2-0 victory was wrapped up before half time Darren Evans profiting from good work by Shane Turner and Paul Nicholls again.

9th v Stocksbridge Park Steels (A) (SSC3) - The giant killing came to an abrupt end at Bracken Moor home of the Northern Counties East side as "silly errors" allowed Mills hit 4 inside half an hour and Frith added the fifth and final goal all before half time. The second half provided an opportunity for the players to restore some pride and they create a host coming off the field with pride intact and with a lot of lessons learned.

Things started to kick into gear and following the defeat to Stocksbridge as Staveley embarked on an eight game winning run that would see them jump from 6th to 1st.

16th v Tinsley Wire (A) - Mark Stuart got the ball rolling with a hattrick in his first start of the season against the previously undefeated home side John Seels got 2, one of which was a penalty and John Stacey got the other. 1-6.

23rd v Sheffield Post Office (H) - With five wins from 6 and being 0-2 up Post office thought they'd done it again and took their foot of the pedal but, were unable to respond as they were hit by a five goal salvo from the home side. John Seels and Mark Stuart scored twice with John Stacey "delivering" the final blow.

***Notice: Race night 28th November 1991 at the Welfare*** Bar open with two short games of bingo in between, all in aid of the club coffers, see you there folks.

30th v Clifton Rovers (A) - John Seels missed a penalty early on but Staveley were soon in front after Mark Stuart's header was tipped over the bar, the tall striker reacted quickest to the resultant corner and flicked on for Steve Shipp to score on 20 minutes.  Chances were being created at both ends but Staveley looked the more likely...rattling the post and crossbar a few times, But in the end had to settle for a more modest scoreline of 0-1.

***Notice: Many thanks to those that turned up at the recent race night which proved to be quite entertaining ('match' report / photographs pending...)

December

7th v Ash House (H) (WT3) - There was a slight blip however in the cup, Chris Dickens scored in the 1-1 which meant the tie went to a replay.

14th v Ash House (A) (WT3r) - In that replay Staveley were reduced to ten following the dismissal of Darren Evans, which owed much to the tricky, frosty conditions where several players were having trouble standing up never mind playing football (hazarding a guess that now in 2015 it would've been called off).

The home side playing the conditions rather than the game took the lead when Staveleys defence didn't deal with a long ball which 'Leary got on the end of, going further in front after they were awarded a penalty for an Andy Knowles handball when he had clearly been fouled in the process.

Adam Carline reduced the arrears on 35 minutes, and only a fine save prevented Simon Shepherd equalising but Bainbridge  notched again and the Premier Division side went through 3-1.

Adam Carline
Chris Dickens

21st v British Steel Stainless (H) - Back to the league and the goals started to fly in. On a pitch passed fit to play just before kick off Paul Nicholls got things underway on twenty minutes by rounding the 'keeper to score and added a second a couple of minutes later, Adam Carline hit the third with a powerful drive from the edge of the box and then 'Nicholls completed his hattrick after some good work down the left by Paul Brodie.

With the wind in the second half Paul Brodie made it five then six as the weather closed in further. Andy Knowles got the next with a "gr-eight" heder and  the management team huddled in the dugout just managed to see John Seels score the ninth and final goal direct from a freekick.

***Notice: The club would like to apologise to all concerned for the untold trouble caused by the pipes bursting in the loft. Unless the insurance company cough up quickly the expense of clearing up the mess may mean that some projects are put on the back burner.

However it is still the intention to progress the club as much as possible and to that end it is hoped that floodlights, hard standing, gates at the end of the car park and possibly roofs on the dugout will be in place soon.

We also wish to install some seating but the quotes we have received for this mean that this will be a long long long term project. Merry Christmas everyone!

28th v Penistone Church Reserves (H) - Proving it was no fluke, and this surely is a club record Paul Nicholls smashed in 8 (eight) and with Simon Shepherd adding 1 more it made it two 9-0 victories back to back.

two 9-0 home victories in a row -
no wonder the fans look happy

January

4th v Abbeydale (H) - Staveley MW are the new leaders following their 6-0 thrashing of Abbeydale, Paul Nicholls hit 4 to bring his tally to sixteen in the last three games!! Simon Shepherd and Adam Carline completed the rout.

Can anyone stop Paul Nicholls?

18th v Sheffield Gas (A) - Doug Atter was in great form for the home side, but the defender couldn't stop Adam Carline converting a John Seels cross after 20 minutes to take all three points back to Derbyshire. 0-1.

February

8th v Kiveton Park (A) - Paul Nicholls was back on the scoresheet, rising to head home a John Seels corner after only 10 minutes to then hit the post from two yards out with the 'keeper stranded (bad bobble?).

With fifteen minutes to go Steve Shipp added a second at the far post with substitute John Stacey getting the third and a fourth at the end of a comfortable 0-4 win.

Gary Weighill - easy debut v Kiveton

15th v Throstles Ridgeway (H) - The winning run came to an end with a 2-2 draw at Inkersall Road. The wind played a part,as did the visiting 'keeper who had one of those days, denying new boy Phil Greaves Paul nicholls and Simon Shepherd. Ady Wells made no mistake though scoring on his debut.

With the wind at their backs in the second half the as yet unbeaten Throstles played four up front and began pumping the ball forward, getting their reward on 65 minutes when Greg Mattocks equalised, reacting quickest to a ball that bounced on the edge of the area. they went ahead with only ten minutes to remaining but a brilliant save by a duly red carded defender following a goal bound chip from Phil Greaves saw John Seels grab a point from the penalty spot.

22nd v Old Edwardians (H) - Blustery conditions made it difficult but not impossible to play football and after just six minutes Paul Nicholls latched onto a Phil Greaves through ball held off a defender and scored his 21st of the season. Two penalty claims were turned down and Ady Wells had his shot cleared off the line, but well on top Staveley had Gary Weighills save to thank for the lead at half time.

In the second half Phil Greaves with a powerful shot and a Mark Stuart header got Staveley back on the winning trail without reply. 3-0

29th v Tinsley Wire (H) - Different team same scoreline this time the first came in the first minute when Steve Shipp headed Phil Greaves freekick back across goal to give Ady Wells the simplest of task to nod the ball home. More chances came and went, Chris Dickens had the pick of them, hitting the bar just before half time.  The second half started same as the first but Steve Shipp this time headed John Seels cross towards goal and in for 2-0. A third and final goal was scored by Ady Wells who raced onto a through ball and coolly slotted it past the 'keeper. to record not only a 3-0 win but a seventh clean sheet in eight games!

March

7th v Sheffield Post Office (A) -  After hitting the bar early on the home side went in front via the penalty spot, and it wasn't until the second half that Staveley looked like the league leaders they were. Ady Wells headed home Chris Dickens' corner and added a second when he latched onto Phil Greaves ball, through a tiring defence making no mistake when one on one with the keeper. Greaves was involved again in the third, releasing Steve Shipp down the right allowing him to cut back to Chris Dickens who "delivered" the killer blow at the far post.

News of the first defeat of the season for Throstles Ridgeway meant that Staveley were now well clear at the top and with games running out it was surely only a matter of time before the trophy came to Inkersall Road.

Ady Wells
14th v Clifton Rovers (H) - Some confusion over the goal scorer in this one. It's written down as Phil Greaves but the paper reported it as Steve Shipp from a Phil Greaves freekick?....either way what isn't up for discussion is the 1-0 win and three more points!

21st v Old Edwardians (A) - Second placed Throstles Ridgeway lost their second game in a row following a "first class" performance by Sheffield Post Office, which meant that victory in todays game would see Staveley Miners Welfare take the title...

There were clearly some nerves in the camp as the champions elect went 1-0 down courtesy of a Steve Wood goal in a game spoiled by blustery conditions.

Manager Dave Tromans worked his magic at half time however and three goals in the final half an hour from Paul Nicholls, Phil Greaves and Rob Langley secured a 1-3 win to crown Staveley Miners Welfare the...

CHAMPIONS!!!

28th v Throstles Ridgeway (A)  as if to rub salt into the wounds a fourth successive defeat was piled onto one the one time challengers, although it didn't really matter anymore the win sent Staveley twelve points clear of now second placed Clifton Rovers.

after just 12 minutes Adam Carline tricked his way past two defenders and setup Ady Wells to smash home. that lead was doubled after 20 minutes when Chris Dickens cut in from the left and crashed the ball high into the net.

The second half was played in torrential rain and the slippery conditions accounted for the Throstles consolation with the ball slipping from Gary Weighills grasp and over the line
