Sunday Team: 1990 - 1991

September

9th v Spire Rangers (A) - Staveley Miners Welfare made hard work of their opening game in the Chesterfield and District Sunday League Division One going a goal down inside just 2 minutes, it was a short lived setback however as after 5 minutes Simon Quigley equalised and Steve Shipp converted a penalty on 35, only for the home side to equalise straight away.

The points were secured with second half goals with another goal from Steve Shipp and one from Jerry O'Connell, on his debut ten minutes from time. 2-4.

16th v Worksop Post Office (H) (Sheffield Sunday Cup 1) - Who gets to keep the match ball when two players get a hat-trick?, that was the dilemma after Steve Botchett and Steve Osbourne both grabbed three. That wasn't the end of the scoring however as Steve Shipp, Simon Quigley and Paul Nicholls all grabbed one without reply. 9-0.

23rd v Brampton Rovers (A) - Not much to say about this one as Staveley slumped to a 5-0 defeat.

30th v Wingerworth (H) - Another defeat followed the somewhat surprising result from the game before but this time it was a much closer affair, Rob Nottingham hit the only goal of the game as the home side won 1-0.

October

7th v Hasland Park Rangers (H) - Rob Langley twice sprung Rangers' offside trap and lashed one in from a freekick bagging a hat-trick, and Steve Osbourne  netted after rounding the keeper in to get Staveley back to winning ways 4-0.

14th v Park Colts (H)(SSC2) - the joy of winning 9-0 in the previous round was short lived as Colts went through 2-1 Ray Hill with the consolation goal.

25th v CSPO (H) - The match of the day saw the top two in division one go up against each other, as you'd expect it was a game of the highest quality with Simon Quigley putting the home side into the lead, with a 20 yard strike, only for Darren Adams to save a point for the home side by knocking it past his own keeper 1-1.

December

2nd v Clowne Wanderers (H) (Alma Cup 2) - Steve Botchetts third hat-trick of the season, a brace from Simon Quigley and one from Paul Nicholls secured a 6-2 victory and easy progress to round three.

Action v Clowne Wanderers

Paul Nicholls runs down the left
Steve Botchett nets a hattrick

16th v CSPO (H) - Daz Evans scored a consolation for Staveley as the home side stretched their lead a the top of the table by winning 3-1.

30th v Nags Head (A) - this was the first of three consecutive league and cup games against the same opponents and Staveley got off to a flier winning 1-5 with Chris Dickens,Stuart Bargh,Simon Quigley,Steve Osbourne and Steve Botchett all on the score sheet.

January

13th v Nags Head (H) (AC3) - The second game in the mini tri-series was a rather more close affair and was played on on icy Inkersall Road pitch in front of around 400 fans!!!.

Nags, belying their lowly league position took the lead on 15 minutes when Paul Sturgess converted a left wing cross and thanks to the heroics of Jamie Baldwin in goal they withstood a barrage of Staveley chances, only succumbing in the last minute when Stuart Bargh scrambled the ball home to force extra time.
Steve Botchett gave Staveley the lead 5 minutes into that extra time with a fine solo effort but Dave Briscoe made sure that Nags hard work didn't go unrewarded with a goal in the second period of extra time to force a replay.

20th v Nags Head (A) (AC3r) - The replay went Staveleys way thanks to a 20th minute Simon Quigley header and another goal from Paul Nicholls ten minutes later. 1-2.

27th v Blue Stoops (H) - If you keep a clean sheet then you've always got a chance and Neil RImmington in the Stoops goal did exactly that ensuring that Varleys winner was enough to keep the points in Walton.1-0.

February

3rd Spire Rangers (H) - Staveley had slipped to mid table but still with games in hand on the leaders however despite Simon Quigley and Paul Nicholls contributing the goals in a spirited comeback from 0-3 down, any thoughts of mounting a title challenge were put to bed as the visitors held on. 2-3.

24th v Wingerworth (H)(AC4) - despite a goal from defender Shane Turner, earlier goals from Rob Nottingham and Jamie Wilson made sure the Alma Cup was finished with for another year.

March

3rd v Park Colts (A) - The Staveley Sunday side were now under the tutelage of the legendary Dave Tromans (still involved in 2015!!)  but the results carried on in much the same vain and Darren Vernon hit the only goal of the game as Colts won 1-0.

10th v Grassmoor (H) - A 5th straight defeat ensued, this time the Barnes Park outfit rattled in 4 with only John Webb replying for Staveley.

17th v Hasland Park Rangers (H) - five became 6 defeats on the bounce as Hasland scored three in the last twenty minutes to cancel out Steve Botchetts opener. 3-1

24th v Wingerworth (A) - Infact not one point was gained during a miserable March period as, firstly time Paul Nicholls  grabbed the consolation in a 3-1 defeat.

31st v Brampton Rovers (H) -...and secondly Rovers rattled in three without reply 0-3.

April

In the Derbyshire times each week there featured a team picture of one of the many sides from all the divisions in the Chesterfield Sunday league, at the start of April it was the turn of "Netherthorpe and Lowgates FC" from Division Ten, who used to get changed in the Cricket pavillion and play on the Netherthorpe school pitches

..Now what has this got to do with Staveley Miners Welfare you ask? nothing really, but its included here because as a ten year old boy the writer enjoyed many a Sunday watching his Dad playing for them.(although not pictured here).

"Up The Gates!"

But back to Staveley Miners Welfare

7th v Doe Lea (A) - A change in month brought about a change in fortunes as Andy Marples, Simon Quigley and Steve Botchet ended a run of 8 straight defeats in all competitions with a 0-3 win.

16th v Park Colts (A) (Chesterfield Senior Cup qf) - Nothing written about this game except a 1-3 win for Staveley saw them into the Semi Final.

18th v Doe Lea (H) - Relegation fears were relieved thanks to two league wins in a week Stuart Bargh got things underway in this 1-0 win

21st v Woolley Moor (A) - Then a Pail Nicholls double and one each from Andy Marples and John Webb secured a 0-4 win.

23rd v Clowne (H) - Another win followed, Paul Bridie and Martin Olivent scoring this time in a 2-1 win.

28th v Grassmoor (A )- The league season was wrapped up disappointingly with a 2-1 defeat. Andy Marples with the goal.

May

The league season ended in a lowly eighth place finish but there was still the Chesterfield Senior Cup to play for....

5th v Killamarsh Athletic (N - CSPO) (CSCsf) - Athletic in their first season in the amateur league have reached three finals and with a powerful opening spell looked set to sweep Staveley aside.

But veteran defender Dave Pugh, young 'keeper Andy Walker and fellow defender Darren Adams had other ideas...

Their resolute defending helped Staveley weather the storm, and provided the platform for the pacy Paul Nicholls to break clear on 41 minutes to score the first of five Staveley goals, the second came just after the start of the second half when Booth put past his own keeper.

Steve Botchett made it 3-0 before Craig Hider reduced the arrears ten minutes from time, but it was too little too late and as Athletic pushed forward for more they were picked off by Paul Brodie who crossed for Paul Nicholls to add his second and a defensive mix up allowed Steve Botchett to also get his second goal of the game. 5-1

23rd v Unstone Athletic (N - Broadoaks ground) (CSCf) - Athletic arrived in the final courtesy of a tight 1-0 win over Nags Head and on a warm evening settled first...with Micky Kealy striking the upright early on.

But it was Staveley that took the lead on 20 minutes when Paul Nicholls used his pace out on the right to go beyond the fullback and crossed for Chris Dickens to head intot he corner of the goal.

SMWFC 1 - 0 Unstone Athletic

Staveley nearly doubled the advantage when Andy Marples swerving corner smacked against the crossbar and from an acute angle Steve Botchett hit a tremendous drive which Rafter just managed to fingertip over.

Athletic pulle done back however on 39 minutes Paul Hobson centred from the right, Greg Mattocks powerful header thundered against the bar and the rebound fell kindly to Gary Pryor who couldn't miss and didn't.

SMWFC 1 - 1 Unstone Athletic

Paul Nicholls was on fire and not long after seeing an audacious chip narrowly go over the bar his cross was flicked on by Chris Dickens for Paul Brodie to convert from close range, with 54 minutes on the clock.

SMWFC 2 - 1 Unstone Athletic.

Staveley dominated the second half and extended the lead when Rafter came racing out of his box failed to collect the ball and was lobbed from all of thirty yards by that man Paul Nicholls.

SMWFC 3 - 1 Unstone Athletic

Which despite numerous other chances for Steve Botchett Andy Marples and Paul Nicholls was how it stayed. Ensuring that the Chesterfield Senior Cup would go back to Inkersall Road...for the second season running!
