Sunday side:1988 - 1989

For the first time in fifteen years Staveley Miners Welfare Sunday side found themselves in Division two of the Chesterfield Sunday league and started the 1988 - 1989 season with one aim...Promotion.

September

4th v Clay Cross (H) - The campaign got off to a good start with a 2-1 win over Clay Cross, with Rob Langley and John Watson on the scoresheet.

6th v William Lees (A) - A good week ensued for Ray Hill as not only did he grab all three goals in this close 2-3 Staveley victory....

11th v Hepthorne Lane (H) - ....he also grabbed all the goals in this 2-1 home victory over the men from North Wingfield.

18th v Highfield United (H) (Sheffield Sunday Cup 1) - Ray Hill once again scored a hattrick to take his tally to eight in three games, but he was outshone by Simon Quigley who banged in SEVEN and Ian Burrow who ONLY got four as 17 (seventeen) were rattled in without reply. Tony Holmes (2) and Ian Hilton got the others as Staveley were rightly featured as team of the week

25th v Carr Vale Reserves (H) - There was no let up in the league form either - a Simon Quigley hattrick ensured a 3-1 home win.

October

2nd v Angel Inn Athletic (A) - The home side lost just one game last season and were challenging at the top again this season. They were brushed aside however by the mighty Welfare from Staveley and again it was a Simon Quigley hattrick aided and abetted by two from Ian Burrow which saw the points comfortably safe. 1-5

9th v Unstone YC (H) (SSC 2) - Simon Quigley and Ian Burrow were on the scoresheet again but with just the one each this time, Trevor Wragg added a third to ensure safe passage into the next round 3-1.

16th v Mastin Moor MW (A) -The shortest trip of the season saw Ian Burrow grab a late consolation as 'Moor moved into second place (behind Staveley) thanks to a double from Glynn Holland. 2-1

23rd v Hyde Park (H) (SSC 3) - Tony Holmes put Staveley in front but they were made to go the distance after a Phil Robinson equaliser forced extra time. Darren Evan and Ray Hill ensured that penalties would not be needed however ensuring a 3-1 win.

30th v Pilsley Star (A) - The 2014 / 15 sponsors of  Staveley Miners Welfare 'keeper Chris Butt inflicted the second defeat of the season, winning 2-0 thanks to Paul Wright and Roy Lowbridge.

November

6th v Angel Clowne (H) - Dense fog threatened the postponement of the game, luckily though it cleared enough for those present to see a Tony Holmes goal give the home side a 1-0 win. Which thanks to a surprise first win for William Lees at Blue Stoops put Staveley top of the league.

13th v Coal Aston (A) - Ray Hill and Steve Johnson scored the goals that ensured the points came back to Inkersall Road. 1-2.

20th v Woodhouse West End (H) (SSC 4) - The snow didn't prove too much of a problem as for the second time this season Staveley hit double figures 13(thirteen) in all with only one against. Steve Johnson scored 6, Simon Quigley 3, Rob Langley 2 with Darren Evans and John Watson grabbing one a piece.

27th v Blue Stoops (A) - The men from Walton put their season back on track by winning 0-2 and moved into second place as a result.

December

4th v Derbyshire Times (H) - Simon Quigley and Ray Hill goals were not enough to stop a second successive defeat. 2-3.

11th v Arbourthorne EA (A) (SSC 5) - The Sheffield Sunday Cup dream ended in round 5 Darren Evans scored the consolation goal 2-1.

18th v Carr Vale Reserves (H) (Alma Cup 2) They had better luck though in the Alma Cup and progressed into round three five goals to two thanks to Darren Adams, Simon Quigley,Darren Kelk, Rob Langley and Steve Johnson.

January

8th v Carr Vale Reserves (A) - A 0-8 win was secured courtesy of a Steve Johnson hattrick, and one each from Simon Quigley, Darren Kelk, Bob Cadywould, Chris Dickens and John Watson, but the two previous defeat meat that Staveley has slipped to second in the table.

15th v Angel Inn Athletic (H) - The Match of the day was at Inkersall Inkersall road as the top two went head to head. Athletic went 0-2 up but two in five minutes from Ian Burrow and Darren Adams ensured the points were shared, and it remained "as you were" with Athletic Top and Staveley in second separated purely by goal difference. 2-2.

22nd v Angel Clowne (A) - Shane Turner scored the only goal of the game unfortunately it was for the home side. 1-0.

29th v William Lees (H) - the same scoreline but in Staveley favour this time, Chris Dickens scoring against the divisions bottom club. 1-0.

February

5th v Mastin Moor MW (A) (AC 3) - the league derby defeat early in the season was avenged with a Steve Johnson brace and a penalty from Simon Quigley, Steve Hadfield and Justin Levsby scored for the 'moor making the final score 2-3.

12th v Pilsley Star (H) - A 2-0 win thanks to goals from Darren Adams and Ray Hill put Staveley back on top but level on points with Hyde Park and only one in front of Angel Inn Athletic having played 2 more games than both meant that promotion was anything but certain.

19th v Blue Stoops (A) - Darren Evans got revenge for 'Stoops win a Inkersall Road earlier in the season with the only goal in this 0-1 win.

26th v Mastin Moor MW (H) - Staveleys bogey side struck again, as Derek Brothwell netted after just two minutes for 'Moor.

Darren Adams levelled for Staveley but Roy Marples and Brothwell again put the visitors in complete control. Simon Quigley reduced the arrears but the game was put beyond Staveley when John Martin made it 2-4 midway through the second half.

Steve Johnson made a game of it with a goal to make it 3-4 but despite throwing everything at it Mastin Moor held on to complete the league derby double.

March

5th v Hyde Park (A) - Staveley came up with arguably the result of the season at just the right time, Simon Quigleys double Chris Dickens and Steve Johnson gve the Inkersall Road men a 0-4 victory over second placed Hyde Park and went back to the top of the table...but with the chasing pack having games in hand it was still tight at the top though.

12th v Doe Lea (A) (AC qf) - the last four of the Alma cup was reached with relative ease, Ian Burrow and Simon Quigley with a 20 yard half volley. seeing them safely through. 0-2

19th v Hepthorne Lane (A) - Simon Quigley was once again in the goals and staveleys top marksmen got another three to add to Steve Shipp and Steve Johnson strikes in this 2-5 win in North Wingfield.

26th v Clay Cross (A) - if it was tight at the top before, there was barely a gnats wing between Staveley and the chasing pack, Steve Johnson and a Rob Langley penalty gave them the points in a 1-2 win but now just goal difference kept them at the top.

April

2nd v Coal Aston (H) - Ian Burrow kept the promotion bus moving with both goals in a 2-1 win, but there was still no breathing space as second place Angel Inn Athletic also won to stay level on points.

11th v Hyde Park (H) - Staveley gained promotion back to the top flight at the first time of asking with an emphatic 5-0 hammering of one time challengers Hyde Park, Simon Quigley scored twice Ian Burrow, Glynn Bytheway and Steve Johnson were the heros!!!

16th v Hasland Park Rangers (N- Duckmanton Lodge) (AC sf) - Staveley carried their league form into the cup and booked a final spot courtesy of a first half Strike from Ray Hill and a Steve Johnson header in the 70th minute, their lower league opposition had no answer. 2-0

23rd v Derbyshire Times (A) -With promotion already secured it was now all about the title and, going into the final game the top of the division could not be any closer.

Staveley did what they had to do by winning this game 1-2 with goals from Ian Burrow and Ray Hill but..now stick with this...

Third placed Angel Clowne could still be champions IF they won their last three games OR if they could win two and draw one AND improve their goal difference by six.*

Mastin Moor MW had finally done Staveley a favour by beating second placed Angel Inn Athletic who could now only draw level on points and would require an eight goal swing in their final game to take the title.

Staveley were already promoted by virtue of the second and third placed teams playing each other in the run in so therefore something would have to give and only one of those two teams would catch them, if results went right for them.

Perfectly clear then eh?

Third placed Angel Clowne got off to the perfect start by beating Hyde Park 4-1, but in the crucial second game they were defeated by Angel Inn Athletic 3-2. which meant that because Angel Clowne couldn't afford that defeat and Angel Inn Athletic needed to win by eight goals. Staveley Miners Welfare were promoted as....

CHAMPIONS!
(on goal difference)

incidentally Angel Clowne won their last game 7-3 and therefore would have won the league on goal difference had they not lost to Angel Inn Athletic.

The season was not over though as there was still the Alma Cup Final to come...

May

19th v Park Colts (N - Saltergate) (Alma Cup Final)...

Bob Green's Park Colts had a great start to  this entertaining Alma Cup Final when Staveleys John Watson lobbed his own keeper with just ten minutes gone, and could have gone further ahead when Stuart Bargh fired just over, and Trevor Brough had a header saved.

But after half time Staveley came out in determined mood, Darren Kelk had come on for the unfortunate John Watson and it proved to be a tactical master stroke as Staveley were level within five minutes Rob Langleys intelligent lofted pass found Darren Kelk racing clear on the left and the substitute made made no mistake to smash the ball into the top corner.

1-1

Six minutes later Staveley were in front...Ian Burrow broke through the middle and was sent sprawling after a challenge by Dave Pugh and Simon Quigley converted the resultant penalty kick.

1-2 Staveley

Chances galore ensued first Rob Langley shot just wide with a freekick. Steve Johnson had a header palmed over the bar and Darren Evans fired just off target when well placed.

At the other end Trevor Brough was denied twice by fine goal keeping by Staveleys Neil Rimmington as was Daryl Roberts. Paul Clarke's cross flashed past the face of goal and Max Bailey headed wide and Rimmington once again saved from Neil Chambers.

but try as they might Park Colts just couldn't equalise and at the third attempt Staveley had finally been crowned Alma Cup....

CHAMPIONS!!!

Rob Langley was named man of the match and the trophy was presented by Chesterfield FC director John Plant to finish of a double winning season!!
