6th v Kelstedge (H) - Staveley Miners Welfare kicked of their 1992 / 1993 campaign in the Mansfield Bitter Chesterfield Sunday Leagues Division One, featuring many of the players that played for the first team on Saturdays.
Kelstedge had waited 25 years to reach the top division however a Steve Botchett hattrick, 2 from Kevin Lee and Steve Shipp, and 1 each from Shaun Oldfield, Paul Nicholls and Ady Cowlishaw, sent the new boys back up the Matlock Road on the back of a 10-0 hiding.
Next up was a pair of Sheffield Sunday Cup derbys
13th v Mastin Moor MW (SSCp) (H) - Phil Greaves, Lee Vernon, Paul Nicholls and a Steve Shipp penalty eased Staveley through to the "first round proper" 4-0

20th v Staveley Victoria (SSC1) (H) - less than half a mile, from pub to pub separated the two Staveley teams and there wasn't much more than that on the pitch either, Steve Botchett and Kevin Lee secured a 2-1 win and passage into the second round, Steve Pritchard scored for Victoria.

27th v Brampton Rovers (A) - Back to league action where a 25 yarder from Phil Greaves put Staveley MW in front and Paul Nicholls doubled that lead with only 10 minutes on the clock.
Steve Botchett supplied Nicholls for his second and the teams third on the half hour and added one himself on 60 minutes. Shaun Oldfield secured a 0-5 victory with a long range effort with 15 minutes left.
OCTOBER
4th v Hepthorne Lane (H) - 'Keeper Phil Holland gathers the ball under a challenge from Darren Adams, he could do nothing however about Steve Bochett who scored the only goal of the game to send yet to concede Staveley MW second in the table (1-0).

11th v K.S.P.O (SSC2) (H) - The Alma Cup holders with former Chesterfield goal keeper Phil TIngay in their team, we're swept aside with relative ease at to Inkersall Road. Paul Nicholls, Kevin Lee, Steve Botchett and two Steve Shipp penalties put the game beyond the visitors who scored the first goal conceded by Stavley MW in the final minute, that honor went to John Gould.

25th v Brampton Anchor (SSC3) (H) - its not often a team that scores three goes away with nothing but thats just what Second Division Anchor left Inkersall Road with Paul Nicholls with three on his own, Kevin Lee and Shane Turner with two a piece and one from A.Talbot ensured an 8-3 victory.
NOVEMBER
1st v Eckington West End (A) - Paul Nicholls, Phil Greaves and two penalties from Steve Shipp secured a 0-4 victory... making it five wins out of "time" according to a slight typing error in the paper...its of course meant 5 from 5 in the league and still no goals conceded.
8th v Killamarsh Juniors (AC1) (H) - Phil Greaves and Pete Kenworthy made sure the home side progressed to the second round of the Alma Cup, the "Legendary" Mick Godber scored for Juniors.

15th v Thurgoland Welfare (SSC4) (H) - with only a minute on the clock Kevin Lee put staveley ahead after converting a Shaun Oldfield pass, Paul Nicholls restored the advantage with fine solo effort after Anderson had equalised for the visitors. Nicholls then turned provider, beating three players before setting up Kevin Lee for his second, Pete Kenworthy made the final score 4-1.
29th v Doe Lea (H) - a close game, but when you're hard to beat you've always got a chance...Paul Nicholls took that chance to seal a 1-0 win.
December
6th v Barlborough (AC2) (A) - Staveley found their opponents "in resolute mood" and were unable to break through until the 80th minute via a Steve Shipp penalty after Paul Nicholls had been floored by 'keeper Booth. Steve Woods equalised right at the death. Staveley eventually progressed thanks to a 3-5 penalty shootout win. Steve Shipp, Kevin Lee, Rob Langley, Andy Knowles and Phil Greaves all scored in the shootout.
13th v Killamarsh Juniors (H) - It had to happen at some point I suppose after three months Staveley conceded their first league goal of the season and had to settle for something other than a win for the first time this season. It started well however as...
Ady Wells put the Welfare one up after just four minutes, but they were trailing 1-2 on 26 thanks to goals from Mick godber and Mark Bright (not the Palace and Wednesday legend)..
Ady Wells scored again after a "Glorious five man move" to send the teams in level t 2 a piece.
Mark Thompson put Juniors back in front and despite having several chances to win the game late on Staveley had to settle for a point after Kevin Lee equalised after a fine solo run.
January
10th v Half Moon (SSC5) (A) - After a longish wait for a game Staveley looked jaded but still took Sheffield Anglo Scandia Premier League and Midland Sunday Cup champions and the team widely reported to be the best Sunday side in the area down to the wire.
Kevin Lee equalised on 75 minutes but with just two minutes left and extra time looming (Steve) Kitchen sank Welfare hearts with a goal following a forty yard run.
17th v Kelstedge (A) - An Ady Wells hattrick two own goals and a Phil Greaves strike put Staveley top of the table and made it just the 16 goals against the home side by Staveley this season. Mark Barnett scored a consolation in the 1-6 victory.
24th v Wingerworth (H) - Paul Nicholls and Kevin Lee made it nine league games without defeat in a comfortable 2-0 win.
31st v Woolley Moor (H) - Drawing first blood in the race for the division one title are Staveley MW after a dramatic victory over their nearest rivals.
Both sides started the game having dropped just a single point and a large crowd was on hand at inkersall Road to witness the showdown between the big guns.
Woolley's Nigel Bailey broke the deadlock when he turned quickly and drilled the ball past Andy Walker on 28 minutes

Staveley in search of the equaliser piled on the pressure and Paul Nicholls equalised, heading in ten minutes after hitting the upright.

Two minutes in the second half Slinn's miscued clearance allowed Ady Wells the simplest of chances and he made no mistake firing the home side into a 2-1 lead.

Staveleys task was made slighty easier on the hour when Slinn was dismissed after making a "gesture" to the refferee after being cautioned, but instead of crumbling they equalised when Andy Walker goal kick was sliced to Doug Newton who hammered it first time into the net.

With just six minutes left Ady wells got free down the left and squared the ball perfectly to Paul Nicholls who drilled the ball home

7th v Matlock Red Lion (H) - Staveley dropped only their second point of the season in a game that should have been played away but for some reason was switched to Inkersall Road Ady Wells with all three goals in a 3-3 draw.
14th v Coal Aston (H) - The home side were not in a loving mood on valentines day as they crushed the visitors 6-3 with goals from Lee Vernon (2) Paul Nicholls (2) Ady Wells and Shaun Oldfield (1).
21st v Hepthorne Lane (A) - A five star performance sent Staveley 4 points clear at the top of Division One Kevin Lee led the way with 3 whilst Paul Nicholls and Ady Wells bagged the others.

28th v K.S.P.O (H) - top of the table maybe, but there was still a long way to go as perennial rivals K.S.P.O arrived in town and inflicted Staveleys first League defeat of the season...
Ady Wells put the Welfare in front but just moments later Lee Vernon stretched to clear but only ended up "toe poking" the ball into his own net. Roger Cutt then headed home to give the visitors a 1-2 lead at halftime.
Paul Nicholls and Ady Wells soon put that right and heading into the closing stage Staveley were still 3-2 infront but by full time Dean Stephensons 25 yarder and Julio Aciernos strike from a tight angle gave KSPO the points 3-4.
The match was perhaps more significant because it was refereed by Brimingtons "up and coming" Glen Turner who would go on to become one of Englands officiating team at the 2006 Fifa World Cup.
March
7th v Grassmoor WMC (H) - it didn't take long to get over the defeat from the previous game. Steve Botchett got 1 of the goals leaving Kevin Lee, Ady Wells and Paul Nicholls to argue over who got the match ball following hattricks for each of them, in a 10-2 win.
14th v Hasland PR (A) - Ady Wells continued his excellent goal scoring form by adding 2 more whilst the home side could only manage one in reply.
18th v Peacock Rangers (AC3) (H) - History was made as the game represented the first ever game in the Chesterfield Sunday League or Cup played under floodlights (apart from finals at Chesterfield FC's Saltergate). Paul Nicholls and Steve Botchett scored the goals in a 4-1 win to cap a memorable day, in front of a near 300 crowd!!!
21st v Eckington West End (H) - as is usually the case with successful teams the fixtures were piling up and the availability of players was also becoming a problem.
Defender Steve Shipp was starting his second game in a row between the sticks and amazingly he only conceded one in the previous game and the same number again in this. Dave Pugh made sure the points were shared. 1-1.
28th v Doe Lea (A) - Maybe theres something in defenders playing in goal, Steve Shipp reverted back to a more familiar role outfield and was replaced by fellow defender Shane Turner, he went one better than Shipp though and kept a clean sheet!!
At the other end Kevin Lee and Steve Botchett (2 each) and Ady Wells got the championship train back on the rails. 0-5.
April
4th v KSPO (A) - Shane Turner deputised in goal and the title race was brought down to just a single point as Pete Kenworthy and Steve Shipp scored our goals in a 2-2 draw (Keith Edwards ex - Sheffield United turned out for the home side) whilst second placed Woolley Moor won 2-1 at home To Hasland PR.
8th v Killamarsh Juniors (A) - Andy Walker was back in goal as the Welfare took on a more familiar look,Andy Knowles ensured that two more precious points were added to the table 0-1.
11th v Matlock Red Lion (A) - Another tight game ended in a draw thanks to Ant Burtons goal, second place Woolley Moor just couldn't capitalise however as their game against Doe Lea ended goalless.
15th v Coal Aston (A) - defender Shane Turner was back in goal and kept a clean sheet, which helped Ady Wells and the tem grabbing the 0-2 win which also sent the home side bottom of the table.
18th v Hasland PR (H) - A Phil Greaves goal helped claim the 1-1 draw which set up the shootout for the Division one title as the next opponents were second placed...
20th v Woolley Moor (A) - Andy McGurk missed a great chance for the home side as did Steve Botchett for Staveley twice seeing power headers saved. Surprisingly the two goal crazy leaders battled it out without scoring in the entire 90 minutes.
25th v Brampton Rovers (H) - Right now would be an opportune moment to insert a league as there were now only two league games left to decide whether Staveley Miners Welfare or Woolley Moor would be crowned Champions of the Chesterfield Sunday League. unfortunately one wasn't printed in the weeks newspaper so....
After goals from Paul Nicholls and Lee Vernon had given Staveley a 2-1 victory against Brampton Rovers, they only needed one more point from their final game v Wingerworth to secure the title due to a superior goal difference to that of Woolley Moor...it couldn't have been much tighter.
The outcome would have to wait however as the Alma cup then took centre stage.
27th v Holymoorside (ACqf) (H) - a 5-1 win sent Staveley into the semi finals thanks to goals from Ady Wells (2) Ant Burton, Lee Vernon and Paul Nicholls and after the game good news arrived in the shape of an injury hit Woolley Moor side losing 7-0 at the hands of Doe Lea which meant that not only was there the prospect of cup silverware... with a league game to spare Staveley Miners Welfares Sunday Side were also League....

May
2nd v Kelstedge (ACsf) (N - Biwaters Clay Cross) - Champions Staveley were stunned as the villagers raced into an early lead when Richard Green fired home with only three minutes gone.
The Double chasers responded by taking a grip on the tie and levelled on 29 minutes when Paul Nicholls burst clear on the right to centre for Lee Vernon to equalise.
Just two minutes later Ant Burton beat his marker with ease and his cross shot deceived 'keeper Adams to make it 2-1.
It looked plain sailing for Staveley, but Mark barnetts low shot was parried by Walker and Mark Connolly tucked home the rebound to make it 2-2.
Kelstedge made life difficult but as the game was seemingly heading for extra time Lee Vernon broke down the left and found Ady Wells free in the box who smashed home the winner with seconds left.
7th v Three Horse Shoes Colts (ACf) (N - Saltergate) - A crowd of 611 turned up at the home of Chesterfield FC, to witness the Alma Cup Final between hot favourites Staveley Miners Welfare and the Three Horse Shoes from Brimington, who were in the Division below albeit Champions.
Staveley threatened early on through Steven Botchett and Darren Adams, but horse Shoes had a great chance when Bob Reddish and Daz Vernon (he of SMWFC saturday side ) combined to set up Trevor Brough whose fierce drive was touched over by Andy Walker in the Staveley goal.
Ady Wells had two efforts scrambled away and Lee Vernon fired over, whilst back at the other end Steve Johnson was adjudged to have fouled the keeper as he tried to get on the end of a cross.
both sides were giving as good as they got, on 75 minutes Horse Shoes lively Reddish was replaced by Tim Greenslade. Just five minutes later Greenslade had given his side the lead a tremendous drive from the left flying past Andy Walker.
Staveley stormed back and hit the woodwork through Ant Burton and it was clear that it wasn't to be their day when Lee Vernon went through only to see Woodhouse in goal claim the ball one handed, and it was Three Horseshoes Captain Daz Vernon who went up to lift the Alma Cup.

11th v Wingerworth (A) - The season wasn't quite yet over and there was still one league game left to play. It seems that everyone had lost interest by this point, as the team crashed to a 0-3 defeat and no one bothered to record the team details so...
...Staveley Miners Welfare Sunday just missed out on a league and cup double but I think they, can be pretty proud of their efforts....
