Sunday Team: 1984 / 1985

Staveley Miners Welfare began life as a Sunday side all the way back in 1962 playing under the name of "The Nags Head" and I still live in hope that some sort of record / archive might still exit from that time but it highly unlikely.

So this from the 1984 / 1985 season might just be the earliest full(ish) record there is. The Saturday side as we know it today was still 5 years away....

There were also some interesting "Inter league" games and you can read about those here.

SEPTEMBER

2nd v Park Colts (H) -Last seasons undefeated Division two Champions got a rude awakening to life in the top division (1) of the Woodleigh Chesterfield Sunday League, as they lost 2-3 thanks to two goals from Staveleys Geoff Wragg and one from M.Ryan - all five of the goals coming in the second half.

9th v Carr Vale Colts (H) - Carrying on the good start to the season Staveley won 3-1 at Inkersall Road thanks to goals from Trevor Wragg (2) and Ray Hill. John Whittaker with the consolation for Carr Vale.

16th v Spire Rangers (A) - Gary Sanderson put the home side in front after just three minutes and would have doubled that lead just before halftime had Staveleys E.Hardy not saved Paul Manns penalty.

Mann was not to be denied however as he put Rangers two goals to the good from fifteen yards out straight after the interval. Ray Hill got one back for Staveley but it was not enough to prevent their first defeat of the season as John Gould added a third Spire goal late on.

23rd v Grassmoor WMC (H) - A great day for Staveleys Robbie Hall after coming back after an 18 month lay off with multiple leg fractures he scored one and made the other for Gary Bagshaw in a 2-1 win.

30th v White Horse Whittington (A) - Staveley moved into second place thanks to four unanswered goals.Three from Ray Hill who then set up newcomer Ian Hilton for the other. it was a good all round team performance with Mally Ryan pulling the strings in midfield and veteran Phil White organising the defence to keep their first clean sheet.

7th v Unstone YC (H) - In Hilton was once again on the score sheet as Staveley set about trying to catch leaders CSPO, Ray Hill added another and Geoff Wragg got 2 in a 4-1 win.

14th v Langwith Gate (A) - The dismal form of the home side seemed to have come to an end as they led for most of the game thanks to an Ian lyons goal, however 15 minutes from time Ray Hill equalised direct from a free kick and added a last minute penalty to seal a last gasp victory for Staveley 1-2.

21st v North Wingfield WMC (H) - Ray Hill, Robbie Hall and Kevin Wragg all made it onto the scoresheet to secure a comfortable 3-1 win

11th v Park Colts (A) (Alma Cup round 4) - A performance to remember from defender Phil White on this special Sunday, as he kept a clean sheet playing in goal....

Geoff Wragg opened the scoring with a fine headed goal and two more goals just after the break from Phil Partington and Gary Bagshaw put the game beyond the home side long before Kevin Wragg added the fourth. 0-4.

18th v Angel Inn Athletic (A) (Derbyshire Sunday Cup Round 2) -  it was a real "rags to riches" story in the cup as brothers Geoff (3), Trevor and Kevin Wragg scored the five goals that sent staveley through...

25th Pilsley Star (H) - Staveley went level on points with CSPO at the top of the table thanks to a 1-0 win courtesy of a Robbie Hall goal ten minute into the second half

December

2nd v Langwith Gate (H) (AC2) - Ray Hill with 2 and Geoff Wragg with 4 (four) goals did the damage as Staveley cruised into the next round with ease 6-1.

9th v Shirebrook KCB Utd (H) (DSC3) - A slightly more difficult cup tie but still with the same result Ray HIll ensuring passage this time around. 1-0.

23rd v Spire Rangers (H) -  Staveley received an early present on Christmas eve eve for not only did goals from Wraggs, Kevin and Geoff, Gary Bagshaw and Ray Hill give them a 4-1 win, it also put them top of the table.

30th v Grassmoor WMC (A) - two points were once again secured thanks to a 0-5 away win. Ray Hill and Robbie  Hall bagged two a piece and Ian Hilton added the fifth.

Precious little football was played at the start of 1985 as old mother nature took centre stage, as temperatures as low as minus 10 were recorded, causing widespread frosts, snow and the decimation of the entire Sunday league....if you like that sort of thing theres a more indepth look here

January

6th v Whittington White Horse (H) (AC3) - progression into the last eight was ensured thanks to two goals in five minutes from in form Ray Hill and Kevin Wragg. 3-1.

February

3rd v North Wingfield WMC (H) (DSC4) - The first game for just shy of a month saw a rusty Staveley battle out a 1-1 draw after extra time with a goal from Ray Hill and will now need a replay to progress.

24th v North Wingfield WMC (A) (DSC4r) - That replay was played almost three weeks later Geoff Wragg and Gary Bagshaw both scored twice and a fifth goal was added by Ray Hill, wasn't as comfortable as it sounds though as the home side got 3 themselves. 3-5.

March

3rd v Derby Crusaders (A) (DSC5) - This was the 4th cup game in a row and a 1-0 win thanks to another Ray Hill goal ensured that a fifth was sure to follow.

10th v Spire Rangers (A) (AC4) - Staveley crashed out of the Alma Cup following a 3-1 defeat, after previously hitting the bar Paul Mann put the home side ahead after a fumble from stand in 'keeper, defender Phil White, Robbie Hall equalised but it wasn't to be as John Gould scored twice in the last ten minutes.

17th v CSPO (A) (DSCQF) - things started off well against the league title rivals Brian Chapman giving Staveley the lead on 25 minutes, but CSPO soon equalised with a goal from Phil Greaves - who was to go on and make an important contribution to Staveley Miners Welfare in the years to come, and they went through courtesy of a Max Barkley goal 15 minutes from time. 2-1.

24th v Unstone YC (A) - Unstone became the new leaders of the first division with a 4-2 win, Geoff Wragg and Ray Hill had twice put Staveley in the lead but they just couldn't hold on.

April

There was still plenty of time to go in the title race however, as Unstone were only three points clear of now fourth placed Staveley but had played 8 (eight) games more...

however those games in hand were going to have to be played almost every other day due to the many many postponements earlier in the year....

2nd v Dronfield (A) - Starting the day bottom of the table the home side gained a very good point in this 2-2 and started what was to be a dramatic climb to safety and put a huge dent in Staveleys title challenge, the game finished 2-2 with goals from Brian Chapman and Gary Bagshaw.

4th v Park Colts (H) - Another dip ensued with another 2-2 draw this time it was Robert Cadywould and Brian Chapman again who scored the goals.

7th v Wingerworth (H)  - Better news arrived in the shape of 2-0 win thanks to goals from Geoff Wragg and Pete Seals.

Due to the amount of games they had already played the league leaders dropped like the proverbial (Un)stone, and were now below Staveley, a miss print in the paper had the Inkersall Road men in 6th with more points than Park Colts in third... top of the table however were CSPO two points in front and with two games in hand.

18th v Carr Vale Colts (A) -  Kevin Wragg and Phil Partington grabbed the goals in a 0-2 win.

23rd v Dronfield (H) - The away side moved off the bottom of the table for the first time in ages thanks to a surprise 0-1 win which again seriously dented Staveleys title challenge.

25th v Pilsley Star (A) - Despite two more points in a 0-1 win via a Ray Hill goal, Staveley fell 5 points behind leaders CSPO who had only dropped 1 point all season up to now and showed no signs of slipping up.

Interestingly, Stuart Wall's 20 yard strike in extra time fired, division 5 Stadium Athletic into the Mansfield Cup Final...Stewarts son Ellis now plays for the Staveley Miners Welfare first team in the Northern Counties East Premier League and at the time of writing (29/01/2015) is second in the clubs goal scoring charts!

28th v White Horse Whittington (H) - Phil Partington made a rare appearance and celebrated by scoring two goals in Staveleys 3-0 win. Pete Seals with the other one.

May

2nd v Wingerworth (A) - In the quirky world of amatuer football Staveley turned a 1-0 defeat into a win thanks to an ineligible player on the opposition team sheet!

5th v CSPO (A) - the outside chance of a league title was all but extinguished as Staveley could only manage a draw against the league leaders representing  only the second point they'd dropped all season. Kevin Wragg with the goa.l 1-1.

12th v Langwith Gate (H) - CSPO had already wrapped up the first division title with a 5-0 win over Brampton Rovers on the preceding wednesday which meant Staveley would finish the season as runners up. with the pressure off they condemned the visitors to relegation with an emphatic 12-0 victory. Trevor Wragg, Geoff Wragg and Ray Hill had to fight over the match ball with 3 each Ian Hilton grabbed 2 and stand in keeper Phil White scored from the spot.

16th v CSPO (A) - The top two went head to head but as just about everything in the division was already settled it was pretty much a dead rubber, CSPO went away with the points after a 2-0 win and in doing so gained their highest ever points total in a championship winning season

19th v North Wingfield WMC (H) - Staveleys penultimate game of the season  ended in a 4-0 win Geoff Wragg with 3 and his brother Kevin with the other.

?? v Brampton Rovers (A) -  Result Unknown.

??v Brampton Rovers (H) - There also appears to be no mention of the home game either - result unknown

Unfortunately 1984 / 85 ended trophyless, however that was put into perspective by events elsewhere in the footballing world and to round the season off the Chesterfield Sunday League held a benefit match for the victims families of the terrible fire at Bradford City's ground - Valley Parade.

Grassmoor WMC played Stadium Athletic, the result though is unknown...

Rest in Peace.
