Match Preview v Thackley - Home - 20/08/14 - League

So it was a case of Friday nights alright, as Staveley Miners Welfare progressed to the next round of the FA cup following an impressive 2-0 victory over neighbours Worksop Town.

Incidentally the reports and fixtures will be available throughout the season on the First Team page accessible via the "teams" tab at the top

The goals came from Ellis Wall and Jordan Eagers and those two jump straight onto the "Meaningful goals" table for 2014/15, which is making a return this season. As are the other awards that we dished last year and you can view how each one unfolds on the stats page....(also accessible from the First Team page)

Just like the buses you wait ages for a home game then 4 come along at once….the third of those is this coming Wednesday against....

Thackley  20th August 2014 7:45pm - Inkersall Road

Formed in 1930 the “Denny boys” spent most of their early years in local Bradford Leagues, winning the West Riding County amateur League 5 times.

They are founder members of the Northern Counties League having join at its inception in 1982 and have retained a premier league birth every season since – the only team to have done so.

News

Thackley have recently added former Bradford City man, Luke O’Brien to their ranks and secretary Mark Holstead said:

"The signing of Luke is a significant one for Thackley. It is our highest profile name for many years and benefits both parties".

According to Wikipedia the 25 year old left back brings a wealth of experience having played in 131 games for Bradford as well as also turning out for Exeter, Oxford United and Gateshead.

One player who isn’t available for Thackley is Matt Mathers, the talismanic striker who has scored a shed load of goals for them has moved on to pastures new and now plays for local rivals Albion Sports...who, at the weekend sent the men from Dennyfield crashing out of the fa cup 1-2.

Line up v Albion Sports 16th August

Convey (Hudson 35 mins); Hargreaves; O’Brien; Whiteley; Hopkins; Woodhead; Eastwood (Lyness 90 mins); McGuire (C); Howland; Farrall (Bilney 65 mins); Trueman.

Come here often?

We don’t actually have the best of records at home in the league our only win came in December of 2011 when Richard Patterson, Joe Thornton and Simon Barraclough got themselves on the score sheet in a 3-1 win

Last season Thackley came to us on the back of four games in a week but still managed to turn round a half time deficit after Josh Scully had given us a one goal lead on 12 minutes. James Firth, and Matt Mathers turned the game on it head 2 minutes after the restart before Pat McGuire (the only one of those three still at thackely) put the game beyond us making it 1-3 in the 82nd minute

Season so far….

Its still early days but last seasons surprise early pace setters (they won the first seven games) look to have started in the same vain.

Currently lying in fifth place after a 3-1 away victory at 2014 runners up Barton was followed up by a very creditable  1-1 draw against free spending Handsworth Parramore, two teams who arguably will be there or there abouts.

Final Thoughts?

It remains to be seen how Thackley will cope without Mathers, and the other players they have lost this season manager, Andy Patterson looks to have recruited well however and Thackley will, as always be tough opponents... but they'll be thinking the same about us...

Entrance to the ground is £5 for adults £3 for concessions and theres plenty of beer, food, Mentos for the kids and wall to wall Sky TV.

Up The Welfare!
