Match Preview v Worksop Town - Home - Friday 15th August - FA CUP!

Well a 4-1 defeat is not exactly the start we wanted, but the good thing about this time of the season is that theres a long way to go and theres always another game just around the corner…

…and what a game it is because the...

“tigers tigers burning bright are coming to Staveley on Friday night”

....that’s this Friday 15th August at Inkersall Road (the day after the Sportmans dinner featuring boxing legend Johnny Nelson – tickets still available)

A massive game, one so big that it probably requires some sort of epic soundtrack to it like “Arrival to Earth” by Steve Jablonsky or something similar for not only is a local derby, its also the FA Cup - the greatest cup competition in the world bar none.

So, Who are the “Tigers”?

Established in 1861 Worksop Town are the worlds fourth oldest club still in existence and played much of their early football in the midland league and reached the first round “proper” twice in this period losing 9-1 to Chelsea in 1907 infront of 70,000 fans and 9-1 to Tottenham in a replay after a decent 0-0 result in the first game.

Sadly for tigers fans off the field problems have threatened to end their existence on a number of occasions, ground ownership, and funding problems hit the club in the late 90’s and again after narrowly missing out on promotion to the Conference North last season, only some excellent work by the people involved there see them live to fight another day, albeit two divisions lower in our own “Toolstation Northern Counties East Premier League”.

Previously….

Their appears to be have only ever been one competitive meeting between the two sides that being a 3-0 Sheffield Cup win Lee Beeson and Jamie Jackson with 2 for the Tigers, who went on to win the final 3-2 against Frickley.

The two “towns” have met many times before and theres an amusing report from one of those encounters in the programme for this game priced at £1.50.

News…

Staveley were without at least five players for the Bridlington game and all should come back into contention for a start.

Worksop won their first game of the season 3-2 away at Armthorpe Welfare and are in action again on Wednesday night at home to Liversedge so manager Mark Shaw may look to shuffle the pack a bit

Line up v Armthorpe

Gathercole, Wafula, Pursehouse , Barnett, Liversidge, Shiels, Sellars , SCOTT, Twell  (Booth 70), Johnson (Jordan 86), Hawkins (Elliott 75) . Not used: Jacob Dawson, Chris Whincop.

The second name in that list should be familiar with Staveley fans, "Jono" played 18 times for us last season and scored 1 goal. Another face playing in Worksop yellow this season is Tom Mullen who made two sub appearances for us in 2013/14.

Final Thoughts

A well known brand of Danish beer doesn't do Friday nights but they’d probably be like this one, a local derby a massive crowd, a beer or two, football under the floodlights and...

The FA Cup!
